Windows XP Operating System Software is a popular OS from Microsoft Corporation. After windows XP, two more operating system has come named Vista & Seven for home user. But none of them cannot beat the popularity of Windows XP Operating System. Today in this tutorial, for Windows XP Users,I am going to show you some cool windows xp computer security tips.

For windows XP Computer Security Tips, I am going to use Group Policy Object (GPO) in this tutorial.

Note : After Changing the Group Policy Settings you need to restart your computer.

Cautions : Please be careful to play with group policy settings. Any misuse of group policy settings will hamper your normal computer activities.

Now begin the Windows XP Computer Security Tips Tutorial.

1. Login to your Windows XP Computer.

2. Click on Start and open RUN .

3. Type gpedit.msc and press Enter. Shown in below picture

4. Group Policy Window will open. Shown in below picture

5. For Windows XP Computer Security Tips, I am going to show you in group policy:

i. To disable Autoplay

ii. Hide MY Computer Local Drive

iii. Restrict Access to My Computer Local Drive

iv. Prevent user to install program or software from removable device &

v. Prevent user to use Control Panel

i. Windows XP Computer Security Tips – Disable Autorun

a)  From Group Policy Window, expand Computer Configuration – - – Administrative Templates  – - –  System. Then Double Click on “Turn off Autoplay”. Shown in below picture

b)  New window will open. Click on Enabled, select All drives, click apply and OK. Shown in below picture

Explanation : Enabling turn off autoplay will disable all removable device like CD, Pen Drive, Memory card to start automatically. So your windows xp computer will not get infected by autorun.inf file

ii. Windows XP Computer Security Tips – Hide My computer Local Drive

a)  From Group Policy window, click on User Configuration and expand Administrative Templates – - – Windows Components. Select Windows Explorer and double click on “Hide these specified drives in my computer”. Shown in below picture

b) A new window will open. Click on Enabled. Select the drive that you want to hide. Click Apply and OK. Shown in below picture

Explanation: This policy will hide the drive from your Windows XP MY Computer Window.

iii. Windows XP Computer Security Tips – Restrict Access to My Computer Local Drive

a)  From Group Policy window, click on User Configuration and expand Administrative Templates – - – Windows Components. Select Windows Explorer and double click on “Prevent access to drives from My Computer”. Shown in below picture

b) A new window will open. Click on Enabled. Select the drive, click on Apply and OK. Shown in below picture

Explanation : This policy will not allow user to access your local drive from my computer.

iv. Windows XP Computer Security Tips – Prevent Removable Device from installation

a) From Group Policy window, click on User Configuration and expand Administrative Templates – - – Windows Components. Select Windows Installer and double click on “Prevent removable media source for any install”. Shown in below picture

b) A new window will open. Click on Enabled. Again click on Apply and OK. Shown in below picture

Explanation : This policy will not allow you to install any program or software from removable device such as CD and Flash Drive

v) Windows XP Computer Security Tips – Prevent user to access Control Panel

a) From Group Policy window, click on User Configuration and expand Administrative Templates. Select Control Panel. Double click on “Prohibit access to the Control Panel”. Shown in below picture

b) A new window will open. Select Enabled, click on Apply and OK. Shown in below picture

Explanation : This policy will not allow you to access in Control Panel.
